Heat-Pump DHW Heaters at 166 E 34th St, Manhattan, NY

Project Services: VGCOM provided electric DHW heater design services to this building.  Space heating and DHW is provided by two (2), dual fuel, 331HP, steam boilers to the building and were existing to remain. We evaluated a possibility to decouple DHW from the boiler and provide standalone electric DHW system which can provide DHW in throughout a year. In this way, the steam boiler will not be running during summer season and all related maintenance work can be performed during summer season. Furthermore, in a winter season, the boiler will only be providing space heating.

Based on the usage in this building using the total fixtures including 218 kitchens, 280 bathrooms, 8 washing machines, 1 restaurant, and 5 mop sinks, we evaluated various capacity DHWs. We recommend three (3) PVI Durawatt Model 920 L 400A-VE electric DHW heaters which will be sufficient to provide DHW to all apartments, laundry machines located in the basement, and businesses located on the first floor. The new electric DHW heaters will be installed in the boiler room. It should be noted that the existing mixing valve and all associated piping will be existing to remain.
